What is a DEXA Bone Density Scan?
A bone density scan measures how strong your bones are, usually at the hip and lower spine. It is the test doctors use to check for osteopenia and osteoporosis.
You lie on an open table for 10 to 15 minutes while a low-dose X-ray scans your hip and spine. It is quick and painless. Bone loss has no symptoms, so a scan is the only way to find it before a bone breaks.

Lie still on the open table for 10 to 15 minutes while your hip and spine are scanned.

Our physician reviews your scan. With the consult option, our doctor explains your T-score and Z-score and gives you a written report.
How to get ready

- Wear comfortable clothes with no metal, including your bra: no zips, buttons, underwire or jewelry.
- Don’t take calcium supplements before your scan
- Eat and drink normally, and take your usual medicines (except calcium).
- Bring any previous DEXA or bone density reports, so we can compare.
- If you have a referral, bring it or send it to us before your visit.
- Had a barium test, or a CT or MRI with contrast dye, in the last 2 weeks? Tell us when you book.
- Don’t book if you are or might be pregnant.
