Symptoms we treat

It doesn't always look like hot flashes

Symptoms often start years before your last period, and most women don't connect them at first. If several of these sound familiar, it is worth an evaluation.

Hot flashes & night sweats

Sudden waves of heat that disrupt your day and your sleep.

Sleep that stopped working

Waking at 3am, or sleeping eight hours and still feeling flat.

Weight around the middle

Body changes that don't respond to what used to work.

Mood changes & brain fog

Anxiety, irritability, losing words mid-sentence.

Low libido, dryness & discomfort

Vaginal and urinary changes caused by falling estrogen.

The silent changes

Bone loss, rising cholesterol and metabolic changes speed up after menopause, usually with no symptoms at all.

Why a certified practitioner

You've likely been told this is normal

Many women hear some version of it: it's just your age, your labs look fine, try to manage your stress. Most clinicians receive very little training in menopause, and most appointments aren't built to deal with it.

The Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) credential exists for exactly this reason. It is earned by exam through The Menopause Society and is dedicated specifically to menopause care. Dr. Suzan Mahdai holds it.

Perimenopause · usually 40 to 47

Hormones swing while you still have periods. Irregular or heavier periods, worse PMS, early hot flashes, sleep changes, anxiety.

Menopause · usually 47 to 55

Twelve months without a period. Hot flashes, night sweats, dryness, body composition changes, bone density concerns.

Post-menopause · 55 and beyond

The focus shifts to lingering symptoms and protecting your bones, heart and long-term health.

Your first visit

A real workup, not a 10-minute visit

  • 60-minute physician consultation focused on your concerns
  • Full history: family, genetic, medical and surgical
  • Hormone and symptom assessment
  • Metabolic assessment
  • Whole-body DEXA scan for muscle, fat and bone
  • A personalized plan: FDA-approved and bioidentical hormone therapy when appropriate, or non-hormonal options when it isn't

Compounded hormone therapy is used only when there is a clinical reason, and it is not FDA-approved. Labs, imaging and medication are ordered through your insurance when medically indicated.

The one thing an online hormone service can't do

We can scan your bones

When estrogen drops, bone loss speeds up, silently, until something breaks. Bone density DEXA is done here in our clinic and is included in the membership. It shows your real osteoporosis risk and gives a baseline to track. About the bone density scan

Honest answers

Is hormone therapy safe for me?

Many women still worry that hormone therapy causes breast cancer, often because of news coverage of one large study from 2002. The honest answer is that it depends on you: your age, how long since menopause began, your personal and family history, and your other health conditions. For some women hormone therapy is a good option. For others it isn't, and there are non-hormonal treatments that work. We go through your history before any prescription, and we won't tell you it is risk-free. That review is what the consultation is for.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?
Perimenopause is the transition: hormones swing, periods become irregular and symptoms often begin, frequently in the early to mid 40s. Menopause is reached after twelve months with no period. Symptoms happen in both, and both are treatable.
Is hormone therapy safe?
It depends on your age, how long it has been since menopause began, and your personal and family history. For many women it is a reasonable option; for some it isn't. Your physician reviews your history and explains the benefits and risks before recommending anything.
What is the difference between bioidentical, FDA-approved and compounded hormones?
FDA-approved products have been reviewed for safety, effectiveness and quality, and several of them are bioidentical. Compounded hormones are prepared by a pharmacy for an individual patient and are not FDA-approved. We use FDA-approved options where appropriate and compounded therapy only when there is a clinical reason.
Do I have to take hormones?
No. Hormone therapy is one option and isn't right for everyone. There are non-hormonal treatments, and we will go through what fits your situation.
My labs came back normal. Can I still be in perimenopause?
Yes. Menopause is diagnosed mainly from your age, symptoms and menstrual history. Hormone levels swing so much during perimenopause that a single normal result doesn't rule it out.
How soon will I feel better?
It varies by person, symptom and treatment. Your physician will give you a realistic picture. We don't promise timelines.
Why is bone density testing part of menopause care?
Bone loss speeds up when estrogen falls and has no symptoms until a fracture. A bone density DEXA shows your osteoporosis risk and gives a baseline to track. It is included in the membership.
Do you take insurance?
We are fee-for-service, so we don't bill insurance for visits. HSA and FSA cards are accepted and we provide a superbill for possible reimbursement. Labs, imaging and medication are ordered through your insurance when medically indicated.
What does Menopause Society certification mean?
The Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) credential is earned by exam and recognizes clinicians with specific expertise in menopause care. Dr. Suzan Mahdai is an MSCP.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. Follow-up visits can be done by telehealth across California. Your first visit and DEXA scan happen in person at our San Diego clinic.
